When should you use Miwana’s saline solution?
Miwana’s saline solution can be used two or three times a day to moisten the nasal membranes and aid the natural cleaning function of the nose. It has been proved to be a simple, yet highly effective, method that alleviates a number of problems:

Colds
Used as first aid for children and adults with colds. The saline solution dissolves mucus build-up, making it easier to breathe through the nose. Miwana’s saline solution does not cause the blood vessels in the nose to constrict (unlike many other nasal drops and sprays). It is completely safe to use as often as required without any adverse side effects.
The saline solution gently cleans the lining of the nose, removing bacteria and viruses and preventing the nasal membranes from drying out. This helps speed recovery from colds. A recently published study reveals this method reduces the normal period of time it takes to recover from a cold by half.(ref. 1)
For small children with nasal catarrh, the saline solution eases breathing during breast feeding and at mealtimes.

Sinusitis and chronic nasal congestion
Individuals suffering from chronic ailments, such as sinusitis and chronic nasal congestion, find a saline solution offers effective relief. (ref. 2)

Children with middle ear infection
A study was conducted with a group of children suffering from recurring ear infections. Every day, they sprayed their noses with Miwana saline solution or a solution containing harmless bacteria.
The results showed that both methods of treatment, with saline solution and harmless bacteria, led to a substantial reduction in the number of cases of ear infection, reduced the need for antibiotics and decreased the risk of complications caused by the presence of middle ear fluid. Prior to this study, all the children were waiting to have a plastic tympanostomy tube, or ‘ear tube’, surgically inserted into their ears. After the study, 70% of the children were so well that they no longer needed the operation. (ref. 3)

Allergies
Allergies can be treated using a saline solution which dissolves secretion in the nose. The allergenic particles are then either blown out through the nose or swallowed. This is good for the mucous membranes as it reduces exposure to allergenic secretions. Two studies have significantly demonstrated that treating allergy sufferers with a nasal saline solution partially inhibits the secretion of histamine for several hours after treatment (ref. 4) and partially reduces the formation of allergy antibodies (for grass pollen allergy sufferers during the pollen season)
(ref. 5).

Dry noses
Nasal membranes dry out for a number of different reasons, such as hormonal changes in older people, side effects of some drugs, some illnesses or exposure to a dry environment.

A saline solution, which has the same salt concentration as the human body, can be used to keep the lining of the nose moist and thus restore the natural balance of moisture in the nasal membranes and relieve discomfort.

Preventive health care
Many of us are exposed to dry, dusty or unclean environments – at work, school or day care. A saline solution enables the cilia to perform their natural cleaning function more easily and helps prevent ailments, such as respiratory problems, that might otherwise develop.
Workers exposed to wood dust at industrial timber mills reported a significant reduction of problems such as nasal congestion, itching, irritation and sneezing after they used saline solution in the form of nasal spray (ref. 6) . A study has also demonstrated that Miwana’s saline solution has a preventive effect on infections that cause colds
(ref. 1).
